INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL ON CIRCULAR ECONOMY
In the frame of the FORCE-project (Cities Cooperating For Circular Economy)
WHERE?
HafenCity University Hamburg, Germany
WHEN?
5 – 9.08.2019
WHO?
Masters Students with an affinity for Circular Economy in the context of waste prevention, reuse, repair as well as collection at city level. Candidates are welcome from a variety of disciplines, including urban planning, environmental studies, engineering, etc.
WHAT?
Circular economy, urban metabolism, regenerative city, cradle to cradle, urban waste cycles, etc.. All of these concepts and approaches are in a way linked to the question of how can cities better cope with the current models and processes where significant amounts of resources are lost along the products’ and infrastructures’ life cycle. One of the latest socio-political movements in Europe advocates the turning of the waste into a resource as a key to move to more sustainable and circular processes where waste is eliminated and resources are used in an efficient and sustainable way.
The main objective of this course is to better understand these concepts from a theoretical and applied perspective and to develop innovative solutions in the area of waste prevention, repair, reuse, as well as collection in one of Hamburg’s quarters.
The Summer School is part of the EU research and innovation funded project FORCE (Cities Cooperating For Circular Economy), which aims at minimising the leakage of resources from the linear economy and work towards a circular economy. Therefore, the Summer School will focus on sustainable urban processes with a particular focus on electrical and electronic equipment (computers, TV-sets, fridges, cell phones etc.), as one the fastest growing waste streams in Europe and one of the four material streams of the FORCE-project.
The course will be taught by HafenCity University Hamburg in close collaboration with public and private bodies in charge of waste management in Hamburg, Copenhagen, Genova and Lisbon. During the course students from Hamburg, Genova, Copenhagen and Lisbon will work together in mixed groups, in which they will analyse the local context, in order to address complex challenges identified by project partners. Based on their analysis, students will identify solutions to address the challenges through bringing together their unique experiences in different academic disciplines.
Examples of concrete challenges that could be examined include:
• Re-organizing the material chains (site shortage of recycling yards, alternative locations, alternative models) for improving the circularity of electrical and electronic equipment stream;
• Transfer of good practices of waste prevention, reuse, repair as well as collection (e.g. repair cafes, second-hand shops, packaging-free shops...);
• Lack of citizens’ awareness on environmental issues (e.g. information & participation; waste separation ðical consumption);
• Unused potential in the area of prevention as well as collection of old electronic appliances;
• …
The Summer School consists of lectures, site visits, group and field work, poster and presentation of solutions, as well as a written individual assignment. It will include also some social activities (e.g. BBQ) and provide networking possibilities.
In addition
- Travel grant of up to 300 EUR per person (for students from Copenhagen, Lisbon and Genova). In order to receive the travel grant you will be asked to provide originals of all receipts (e.g. flight ticket, hostel etc.). The reimbursement of travel costs accounts only for the money spent on travel and accommodation up to 300 EUR. It means that if you have spent 450 EUR you will receive only 300 EUR back. The money will be transferred to your account after the Summer School.
- 2,5 or 5 ECTS (to be decided at the time of registration to the course)
The workload differs accordingly: for obtaining 2,5 ECTS students will be asked to participate in all lectures taking place during the Summer School, in groups prepare their conceptual solution idea and present it on the last day of the Summer School (e.g. through a poster or PowerPoint presentation), and prepare a short individual paper (2-3 pages) after the course ends. In order to receive 5 ECTS, participants will be asked to fulfill the requirements as for 2,5 ECTS and in addition prepare one, but more elaborated individual paper in the length of about 20-25 pages (it could be for example an analysis of the transferability of their solution from Hamburg to the local context of their home city).
- Lunches will be provided by the organisers
